The perfect town that will you over

Pienza is a small village in the heart of the Val d’Orcia that would probably have become lost in the mists of time if its most illustrious inhabitant Enea Silvio Piccolomini (Pope Pius II) not transformed it to the extent that he did.

Renovation of the town, which took place during the revival of Neo-platonism, was entrusted to Bernardo Rossellino, a pupil of the famous architect Leon Battista Alberti, in 1458.

The result was a unique, utopian town, which extended from the main square following a logical organisation of space and perspective.

First, we have the cathedral, which sits spectacularly in the square; visiting it is a truly unique experience. Indeed, a visit to the upper naves is like a journey through Marian art, composed by the most significant Sienese artists of the 15th century, while walking down through the centre of the building is like taking an enchanting stroll back through its history.

La visita a Pienza non lascia mai delusi. Molti si fermano alla Piazza pensando che il borgo sia tutto lì. Piazza Pio II è senz'altro il punto più suggestivo, ma tanti sono gli spunti interessanti per una visita completa, che non mancherà di toccare anche la Pieve di Corsignano, dove il futuro Pio II venne battezzato.

A visit to the Palazzo Piccolomini is also a must; an example of genuine interpenetration of art and nature with its hanging garden from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the Val d’Orcia and Mount Amiata.

Palazzo Borgia is also visible from the square, a building that houses the Diocesan museum, which is one of the most significant in the province of Siena. Items appear chronologically and so it will be easy to trace the evolution of Sienese painting from the 14th to the 15th century (from Duccio to Lorenzetti all the way to Vecchietta) and to admire Pius II’s splendid English cope.

Pienza is not just the perfect town, but it is also the town of pecorino cheese. Are you ready to try some?
