Horne Museum

a journey into art and history

The Horne Museum in Florence is one of those rare places that offers a truly immersive experienze, transporting visitors back in time to a world filled with beauty and a profound passion for art.

From the very moment you step inside, you’ll be struck by the meticolous care with which Herbert Percy Horne restored these spaces.

There’ s no trace of artificial reconstructions or misleading embellishments here. Instead, every detail reflects a deep respect for history, making this museum a hidden gem in Florence’s artistic landascape.

Horne’s love cofr Italy and Florence

Born in England, Herbert Percy Horne fell deeply in love with Italy and, in particular, the city of Florence.

Drawn by its artistica heritage and timeless charme, Horne decided to make Florence his home. So, he became  part of the vibrant intellectual community of foreign artists, writers, and scholars who were already enchanted by the city’s beauty and history. His passion for italian art and culture is evident in every corner of the museum.

A legacy of passion and expertise

Horne’s spirit seems to linger in the museum’s halls, where every piece is chosen with both love and remarkable eye for quality. For example, among the most celebrated works is a Saint Stephen attributed to Giotto, a masterpiece that Horne himself was quick to recognize as authentic. Art critics later confirmed his attribution, solidifying this work as one of the highlights of the collection.

In this painting Giotto reveals a decorative sensibility, influenced by the refined Sienese school of the 14th century, Yet, the strenght and solidity of Saint Stephen’s face bear the unmistackable signature of the florentine master.

The genius of Horne and the discovery of Piero di Cosimo’s Saint Jerome

Another masterpiece that showcases Horne’s extraordinary intuition is the Saint Jerome Penitent, a tondo (round painting) by Piero di Cosimo. Initially required as an 18th century “Visitation“, Horne’s expert eye quickly identified something far older beneath the surface.

His istinct proved correct: the tondo wa revealed to be a rare Sain Jerome on an unusual circular format, a testament of Pier di Cosimo’s innovatice approach. This remarkable discovery is just one of the many treasures that await to the Horne Museum.

Countless other masterpieces await
