More than Brunello

Montalcino, the last stronghold of the Sienese resistance against Florence, is situated on a high hill.

First, our tour will set off right from the 14th century fortress , where we will take some time to delve into the life of Blaise de Montluc, heroic defender of the Republic of Siena and passionate about women (but not the way you think!).

Afterwards, walking through the enchanting streets of the village, we will discover its churches, ancient fountains, palaces and historical loggias
Obviously there will also be stops to visit the Cathedral and the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Soccorso, which distinguish themselves, respectively, for sobriety and richness.

Many are the panoramic viewpoints from which you will enjoy the wonderful views of the surrounding valleys.

Montalcino, o meglio Mons Ilcinus (il monte dei Lecci) è citato nel 814, in un diploma di Ludovico il Pio, il quale concede all'abate di Sant'Antimo un vasto territorio. Su questa collina luminosa, sorgerà, intorno al 935 l'attuale cittadina, tagliando orizzontalmente il monte per circa un chilometro di lunghezza.

L'Abbazia di Sant'Antimo è uno dei più bei esempi di romanico toscanico. L'istituzione di una Abbazia in questo luogo appartato della Valle dello Starcia è riconducibile alla presenza di una sorgente, le cui acque per secoli, sono passate sotto la zona Ovest della Chiesa. Con l'adozione di un deambulatorio a raggera, l'alternanza dei sostegni (un pilastro a fascio ogni 3 colonne) e la presenza di un matroneo, la Chiesa mostra di ispirarsi ai santuari francesi sorti dalla metà del XI sec. ai primi del XII sec.

Our final stops will be the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, an evocative 12th century complex, founded by the emperor Charlemagne, according to the legend. The sober and solemn interior of the Abbey is characterized by the elaborate capitals and culminates in the light of the apse and in its wooden crucifix.

Veduta dell'ex Convento di San Francesco Montalcino
Il primo insediamento francescano avvenne nel 1218 sui beni della parrocchia di San Marco e nel 1285 su quelli della Parrocchia dei San Michele Arcangelo. Nel 1287 entrambe le chiese vennero demolite per la costruzione della chiesa dedicata a San Francesco. Il complesso conventuale risale al XIV secolo, anche se verso gli anni 70 dell'800, venne trasformato in Ospedale.
